ARTIST STATEMENT

The content or subject matter of my work often focuses on the intersections of gender or traditional modes of gender expression and beauty, race, and finally American politics and identity.

The work is often born from an internal compass seeking to navigate through personal experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Sometimes, but not always, the building of a piece also mimics my thought process in dealing with a particular issue, with the final piece being somewhat expulsive or cathartic.

For me, photography is a process that needn’t be constrained to what we capture through the lens. It is both an active hands-on practice that invokes somatic exploration and entreats singular and communal connection.

Finally, art, its making and viewing, is a conversation between artist and viewer. Our past history, our future hopes, our experiences and emotions are inescapable even as we seek shelter within the temple of our intelligences. I believe every work of art is a pathway for dialogue, a window or door that need only be opened to gain insight into the fiber of our being.
